How to Choose the Right Criminal Defense Attorney

If you are reading this, you already understand the critical need of legal representation when facing criminal charges. You’re not here wondering whether you need a lawyer, you want to know how to select the right attorney for your specific situation. With so many attorneys out there, each promising results, it’s easy to feel stuck or overwhelmed. However, there are specific, concrete factors you can look for to tell whether someone’s truly qualified to handle your case. This guide lays those out plainly, so you’re not just picking a name off a list.

Why the Lawyer You Choose Matters

“Depending on what you’ve been charged with, the outcome of your case could affect everything from your work, to your relationships, and your freedom,” says Minnesota-based attorney Omeed Berenjian of BK Law Group. The lawyer you hire will be the one influencing that outcome every step of the way. Not all lawyers are equipped for that responsibility, that’s why this choice is too important to leave to chance.

Here are a few questions to keep in mind when choosing a lawyer for your case:

What’s their background in Minnesota criminal law?

Criminal law covers a lot of ground, and not every lawyer’s done it all. Some focus on DWI, others on violent crimes or white-collar offenses. So when you’re choosing, don’t just ask if they “do criminal law”. Ask if they’ve handled your kind of case before because someone who’s fought the same battle you’re facing is already familiar with the twists, the challenges, and the strategies that show results.

Have they qualified as a certified criminal law professional?

When you see that a lawyer is certified as a criminal law professional, it’s proof that they’ve been vetted by the Minnesota State Board of Legal Certification. To qualify, they’ve passed a challenging exam, demonstrated significant skills in handling criminal cases, and committed to keeping their knowledge sharp through continued education. That certification gives you a way to tell who’s truly a professional in this field.

Do they have strong recommendations?

Sometimes the strongest insights come from the people around you. Before you dive into online searches, ask friends, family, or colleagues if they’ve worked with a criminal defense lawyer they’d recommend. Beyond a simple recommendation, dig deeper. Were they satisfied with the outcome? Did the lawyer explain things clearly and keep them informed? Did they feel supported throughout the process? These details tell you more than a five-star review ever could.

What are their fees and payment structures?

Before you sign anything, make sure you understand exactly how the lawyer charges for their services. Ask upfront: Is it a flat fee? An hourly rate? Are there extra costs for things like investigators or expert witnesses? Getting clarity on the payment structure now helps you avoid unexpected bills later and gives you a clearer sense of whether their fees fit your budget.

Do they seem genuinely interested in your case?

You can tell a lot about a lawyer by how they approach your first conversation. Are they listening closely? Asking meaningful questions? Do they seem curious about the details of your case, or do you feel like you’re just one more file on their desk? You want someone who shows they care, because the lawyer who’s invested in your case is more likely to fight hard for you.

Conclusion

A criminal charge can leave you feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure of what’s next. But even in this moment, you have rights. A good lawyer makes sure those rights aren’t lost in the process. They stand up for you, help you understand your options, and work hard to protect your future. Whether it’s pushing for a reduced sentence, negotiating a plea deal, or fighting for your innocence in court, the right legal guidance can make a difficult road a little less daunting.
