The\u00a0 Act led to the establishment of the University Grants Commission, a statutory body\u00a0 responsible for the coordination, determination, and maintenance of academic\u00a0 standards in universities across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The core goal of the regulations preventing discrimination and\u00a0 promoting equity in higher education\u00a0 is important and\u00a0 constitutionally valid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. India\u2019s universities should be safe and inclusive\u00a0 spaces for all students. However, <\/span><b>any rule intended to protect must be\u00a0 clear, fair, and balanced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; ambiguity and lack of safeguards can lead to\u00a0 fear, confusion, and misuse, which hurts trust in the system. It\u2019s good that\u00a0 the Supreme Court has paused the regulations for review\u00a0 this gives the\u00a0 UGC and government an opportunity to <\/span><b>clarify provisions, build proper\u00a0 checks and balances, and ensure protections for all students<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 regardless of their background. That way, equity can be pursued without\u00a0 creating harm or division on campuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the UGC Act, the Commission is empowered to recognize universities, allocate\u00a0 grants, and advise the Central and State Governments on matters related to higher\u00a0 education. It also ensures that universities follow prescribed norms regarding courses,\u00a0 examinations, infrastructure, and faculty qualifications. Degrees granted by institutions\u00a0 not recognized under the Act are considered invalid, thereby protecting students from\u00a0 fraudulent or substandard institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The UGC Act plays a vital role in promoting uniformity, academic\u00a0 excellence, and accountability in higher education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By regulating\u00a0 universities and funding mechanisms, the Act helps strengthen India\u2019s education\u00a0 system and supports national development through quality learning and research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Act empowers the UGC to recognize universities, provide financial assistance,\u00a0 frame regulations, and advise governments on academic matters. It also ensures that\u00a0 only UGC-recognized institutions can award valid degrees, protecting students from\u00a0 fake or unapproved universities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Under this Act, the UGC has the power to recognize universities,\u00a0 determine minimum standards of teaching and examination, and\u00a0 provide grants for development and research. It also advises the\u00a0 Central and State Governments on matters related to higher education\u00a0 policy. The Act ensures that degrees awarded by universities are valid\u00a0 only if the institution is recognized by the UGC.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The UGC Act helps prevent the growth of fake universities and\u00a0 promotes quality, uniformity, and accountability in higher education,\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thereby contributing to the academic and professional development of students in\u00a0 India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Overall, the UGC Act plays a crucial role in maintaining uniform academic\u00a0 standards and strengthening the higher education system in India.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing today\u2019s scenario about the UGC protest going on this is my point of\u00a0 view. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students and various groups across India are protesting against the <\/span><b>UGC\u00a0 <\/b><b>(Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions)\u00a0 Regulations, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These new rules were notified by the University\u00a0 Grants Commission to address discrimination based on caste, religion,\u00a0 gender, disability, etc., and require universities and colleges to form equity\u00a0 committees and other mechanisms to handle complaints of unfair\u00a0 treatment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protesters\u00a0 especially from the <\/span><b>general\/unreserved category <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argue\u00a0 the new rules <\/span><b>lack clarity and safeguards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against misuse, potentially\u00a0 leading to baseless complaints and division among students. They have\u00a0 held rallies, marches, burning effigies and submitted memorandums\u00a0 demanding the rules be withdrawn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In several cities, student groups and local leaders have said the regulations\u00a0 are <\/span><b>unconstitutional or discriminatory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toward certain groups and could\u00a0 harm social harmony. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Supreme Court has stayed the implementation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of these\u00a0 equity regulations, calling them vague and possibly prone to misuse. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politicians and parties have taken sides: some call the stay a setback to\u00a0 social justice efforts, while others see the protests as defending\u00a0 constitutional equality. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some student bodies and activists <\/span><b>support <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stronger anti-discrimination\u00a0 measures and oppose the stay, saying the rules are needed to ensure real\u00a0 equality on campuses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:
