They want to get whatever is best for them only and a few are remaining to help others, and many of them do this welfare or help others to get views on their channels respectively. We have been noticing in our present times all these things in our surrounding. But the main thing here is, atleast they are helping out the needy one. This changing process leads to the betterment of many lives. This leads to the social and inclusive development of the people as well as the country also, affecting their lives in every aspect. NGOs are one the imperatives of social development, which act for the welfare of the people. They, an entity which is not the part of the government, funded by donations, grants and the main focus of them is on social work and social services. They often cooperate with the government to help the people in more effectively manner.

Meaning of NGOs:

The NGOs, (the Non-Governmental Organizations), that are non-profit and citizen-based groups, operating independently of government across the world, addressing the common problems of the people including social, environmental or humanitarian issues. They help in contributing their services especially to the marginalized and needy peoples whether it is giving food, shelter, providing education, healthcare facilities, awareness programs, justice from the court, awaring the people about their rights as well as duties to follow…etc, in short helping them with the main purpose not to demanding any kind of consideration from them.

Examples:

A lot of NGOs are there in world, which activates their role in this world all the time. Some of them are, Save the Children, Oxfam International, Doctors without borders, World Vision, CARF International, Amnesty International, Red Cross, those all work at world level. In India, some of them are like, Akshaya Patra foundation, Pratham, SEWA, CRY, Kridey foundation, Vishaka…etc.

Role of NGOs in Social Development:

NGOs are playing a crucial and vital role in the social development, which means the process of improving the well-being and quality of life of every individual so that they can reach their full potential. NGOs act as the guardian of the people, helping them in every aspect and awaring them also. A variety of ways is there from which they are contributing their services to the people of the country. They cover almost every concern of the majority of the people. As, they are non profitable based organization, they are not demanding any kind of profit for them, although they are giving their time for the social services.

One of the main works of the NGO is to aware the people about everything which is crucial for their life and also supports the victims of rape, child abuse, domestic violence, cruelty, acid attacks,..etc, this ultimately, and also aware them about the exploitation, done by the others, whether it is about their fundamental rights, duties…etc. For example, the Vishaka Guidelines are the aftermath of the works or demands of the Vishaka NGO, which raised the voice against the matter of sexual harassment of women at workplace, ultimately constituting a new act concerning the matter that was POSH Act, 2013, advocating a major social development in the security of women at workplace, citing a positive change/development in the society. NGOs’ role is not limited to the awareness but also it helps in providing the basic necessities and social services like, healthcare facilities, food, sanitary pads to the

girls, providing shelter or refugee camps in disaster or emergencies as well along with it also provides support which includes medical help, shelter homes, legal aid, proper counselling, rescuing and all related to that. They are always be in the active mode, whenever there is their need. According to the President of ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) Mirjana Spoljaric, “There is an urgency to rediscover the humanity in one another.” The ICRC, have been working to help, protect and provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by armed conflict and other violence, thus, it is the largest humanitarian network in the world. This largest network has been playing a vital role in the social development and humanitarian work.

Put forwarding the demands of the people is one of the imperatives of the NGO. Rehabilitation, conservation of environment, just development so that the people won’t get affect negatively by filing PILs and raising public issues. In India, the famous Narbada Bachao Andolan (Save the Narmada River Movement) that is a social movement, is the consequence of the demand forward by many non governmental organizations like Narmada Asargrastha Samiti, Narmada ghati nav Nirman samiti …etc, with the support of the people.

They also help in the Poverty reduction and Rural Development by creating job opportunities, vocational skill training programs, helping the local social groups so that they can uplift the communities and promote their skills to earn a better consideration for the upliftment of their life. According to World’s Bank’s estimates of poverty in India (2025), the poverty rates declined in India at regular intervals in the past. This, being a change in the situation of the life of the many people, leading a social along-with the positive change in the life as well as in the area as well.

The NGOs also helps in providing and supporting the education and are against the child or forced labour by the minors under 14 years of age, advocating the Article 23 or 24 of the Indian Constitution which forms the basis or foundation, promoting the lower level as well. Malala Fund is one of them, which provides free, safe, and quality education to every girl child to 12 years, considering it a investment in the local level and campaigning for the global change and local policy changes.

It is not necessary for all the NGOs to stand by alone without any loopholes including lack of proper accounting and transparency, limited reach to the needy ones, shortage of volunteers, ….etc. There must be transparency with regular audits and all along-with strict rules and regulations, improve coordination as well for the proper functioning of the NGO.

In short, we can say that NGOs have a widespread role in the area, country as well as in the world. From providing basic necessities to empowering persons along-with awaring them and providing shelter homes, demanding just laws, campaigning with the network of humanitarian work, providing skills to stand on the feet on its own all are just the positive step toward their development. This, being a well-being program run by some of the positive mindset people, leads to the ultimate social change. Supported by the members of all around the world as volunteers makes a pro step towards the change being positively affecting the society as well as the members of it.

Conclusion:

The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are the vital part for the positive social change and development. They are serving as the bridge of a country between the government and people and acting selflessly for the benefit of the people. Covering every aspect, they are awaring the communities, marginalised or minorities about their rights and duties, governmental services. Notwithstanding on the private profits, they are mostly funded and work for the well-being of the society so that the society can run smoothly including with positive changes demanded or forwarded by the NGOs. Thus, it can be concluded that they are crucially important for the social development.

Author: Janavi Jangid, a 1st year BA.LL.B at Sobhasaria Group of Institutions.
